Nigeria's New Type-Approval Rules — and a 5.4 GHz Trap to Avoid July 2026

Nigeria is one of Africa's largest and most active markets, and it recently refreshed the rules for getting wireless and telecom equipment approved. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the regulator empowered under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, introduced the Nigerian Communications (Type Approval) Regulations, 2024, effective July 29, 2024, establishing an updated framework for approving equipment that connects to communications networks.

In practice, type approval is mandatory before equipment can be imported, marketed, or operated in Nigeria. The NCC accepts CE-based test reports from recognized laboratories, a product sample is generally required (though the NCC may waive that at its discretion), and an NCC regulatory label must be applied to approved products. The regulations explicitly cover short-range devices, terminal devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and approvals are valid indefinitely.

One practical trap is worth flagging. The NCC has issued a notice reminding the market that the 5.4 GHz band — specifically 5.430 to 5.725 GHz — is a licensed frequency in Nigeria, not free-to-use as it is in many other countries. Wi-Fi and other equipment configured for that band elsewhere can run into problems in Nigeria, so band plans should be checked against Nigerian rules before products ship. It's a good reminder that "works in the US or EU" doesn't automatically mean "works in Nigeria."

Looking ahead, the NCC has published a Spectrum Roadmap for 2026–2030 aimed at expanding mobile (IMT) spectrum, a sign that modernization will continue.

The takeaway for manufacturers is to confirm two things for Nigeria specifically: that your product is properly type-approved, and that its frequency plan matches what Nigeria actually permits.
