International Type Approvals

Worldwide Regulatory Overview

The challenge

Selling a wireless or electronic product internationally is rarely as simple as shipping it across a border. Nearly every country requires some form of type approval — also called homologation or certification — before a product can be legally imported, marketed, or sold. And no two countries handle it the same way: what satisfies one market won't necessarily satisfy the next, and the rules shift as regulations evolve. That's the landscape CSIA helps you navigate, in more than 150 countries.

The two questions behind every approval

Requirements vary widely, but most of the differences come down to two questions:

1. Does the country test locally, or accept your existing reports? Some regulators require in-country testing at an accredited local lab. Others accept internationally recognized results — such as your existing FCC, CE, or ISED reports, or reports issued under the CB Scheme — which can save significant time and cost. Knowing which markets accept what is half the battle.

2. Do you need a local presence to hold the approval? Many countries require the certificate to be held by an in-country legal entity, or a local representative to act on the manufacturer's behalf with the regulator. If you don't have a presence in that market, you need a partner who can fill that role — which CSIA provides.

What's involved beyond testing

An approval is more than a lab result. Depending on the market, you may also need to address:

  • Marking and labeling — specific certification marks or label formats on the product or its packaging.

  • Documentation — technical files, declarations, and supporting paperwork, sometimes in the local language.

  • Local representation — an in-country entity or agent, as above.

  • Ongoing obligations — certificates can expire, require renewal, or carry post-approval duties that must be tracked so your products stay compliant and on the market.

How CSIA makes it simple

This is the kind of complexity that's easy to underestimate and expensive to get wrong. CSIA manages the entire process for you:

  • One point of contact for every market, instead of juggling labs, agents, and authorities country by country.

  • A vetted global network of accredited labs, in-country representatives, certification bodies, and regulatory contacts, built over more than 15 years.

  • Full project management — from determining requirements and budgetary cost up front, through testing, marking, and certification, to renewal tracking afterward.

  • Clear, upfront cost estimates so you can decide which markets to enter and when.
